There is a customs WWW site with the detaisl fo what you have to
do to import a vehicle. Forgot the url, but try alta vista.
What I remember is that the process looked cumbersome, with lots of
EPA and DOT clearances needed before you can get US plates on
a foreign vehicle. Maybe Candians would be slightly easier.
(I think a US vehicle can be broght to canada free of charge
if the owner moves there and takes up residence, right?)

Anyway, maybe a more practical solution for those near the border
would be just to keep it registered in Canada. You just have to make an
annual trip up to Canada to get it inspected. Perhaps you also
need a Canadian address (some friend's)  for them to send the
paperwork. Perhaps the Canadians will send to a US address.
(Why should they care)

Yes, I know that in theory you are supposed to register your
car where you live, but I also know many people who never
bother to change registration when they move to a different
state in the US. Never heard of anyone "getting caught" and
don't know what consequences that would have, if any.
