just wondering if anyone would take a second to resolve yet another tire related question. I had new tires put on last year prior to joining the list. Since then i've noticed an unusually high amount of information pertaining to proper tires for the vanagon( i've got an '80 westy). Much talk about about ply's, reinforced, LT, snow, etc... left me wondering if the guy at my local shop may have stuck me with a set that is not only non-recommended for my vehicle, but possibly unsafe?! I must point out though that it drives great, the handling is incredible...although a little soft at times, and the traction is unbelievable. We took it on a 2,000 mile honeymoon trip last February through Colorado,Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah . It literally snowed the entire time, never had to use the chains once-even on passes where they were required! anyway...here's the technical stuff on them. If anyone could translate it into english for me and possibly throw in an educated opinion, i'd be most Grateful. Winter is approaching rapidly here in Colorado and we use our bus every weekend. Just wanna' be sure...T.I.A. "It's all over now baby blue..." -Grand Am GT(made by Kelly/Springfield) -standard load -max weight 1375 lbs -max pressure 35psi (i've got 'em at 38psi since they always look low) -radial ply -DOT pjt7 -M+S p125/60R14 -tread 3 plies (1 polyester, 2 steel) -sidewall ( 1 ply polyester cord) p.s. if i need to take these back and demand the proper tire specifications (which I just assumed they would have checked prior to installing them) what is the most agreed upon tire for overall handling, especially snow and ice traction. |
