I decided to do something about the oil leaks on my 82 Westie, and as the engine has 145,000 km on it I thought I'd at least pull the heads to have a look. I've pulled the engine on a 78 with the help of my trusty Haynes, and figured this one couldn't be much more difficult. Unfortunately, this one is an automatic. Haynes says to disconnect various bits and pieces, which I did, and then remove a plug in the front of the crankcase and rotate the engine in order to remove three bolts in the torque converter. You can see the bolts (just), but you can't get a wrench on them. Now, Haynes didn't say anything about taking off the fuel injection first, but I don't see how the hell one can get at these bolts without doing that, and even then it wouldi be a pain.
