But you might consider looking for a different set of 3 and 4th gears.... Since you are planning on rebuilding the tranny, this seems like an easier and more effective option assuming that the "super strength" off road racing gears that I have seen offered would work in a syncro tranny... dave ---------- X-Sun-Data-Type: enriched From owner-vanagon@VANAGON.COM Wed Oct 14 14:47 PDT 1998 Return-Path: <owner-vanagon@VANAGON.COM> Received: from waydt87 (waydt87.openmarket.com [207.19.43.87]) by po-2.openmarket.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id RAA12376 for <vanagon@vanagon.com>; Wed, 14 Oct 1998 17:50:29 -0400 (EDT) X-Sender: sullivan@po-2.openmarket.com X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0 (32) Mime-Version: 1.0 Message-Id: <3.0.32.19981014175410.00c00490@po-2.openmarket.com> Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 17:54:13 -0400 Reply-To: Michael Sullivan <sullivan@OPENMARKET.COM> Sender: Vanagon Mailing List <vanagon@VANAGON.COM> From: Michael Sullivan <sullivan@OPENMARKET.COM> Subject: TDI gearing changes? If I install a 1.9L TDI in my Syncro it seems as if I will have to reduce the final drive somehow by approximately 88% to keep the effective speed per rpm ratio.
Current wasserboxer redline = 5200rpm Current wasserboxer @70mph = 4000rpm w/ 27"x8.5 tires Future TDI redline = 4600rpm Future TDI @70mph = 3550 w/ 27"x8.5 tires
So to the question: if I change the final drive from 4.83 to approx 4.25 it seems as if I must also change the FRONT differential drive too -- correct? or am I mistaken?
Is there anyway else to do this (other than adding "monster" tires)? How about changing all the gear ratios? (I'm gonna rebuild it anyway)
Cheers,
