Subject: Subaru 2.2L Engine in Vanagon - Any Experiences?

As the previous and current owner of both VWs and Subarus, I can attest to the amazing longevity of the Subaru Boxer engines. My family has put well over 700k trouble-free miles on 5 Subarus, and the one I am currently driving has nearly 180k miles on it; the engine compression is still nearly that of factory specs!

My 1984 Westy only has 123k miles on it, but I realize that I will probably be looking at an engine rebuild in the next few years. I am very intrigued by the idea of replacing the VW engine with the 137hp Legacy engine. I've looked at the KEP site, and it further encouraged me.

Has anyone else done this swap? Any advice, cautions, tips, anecdotes for someone considering it? I sure would like to see this information compiled in the archives.

Thanks, Marty Wallace, grad. student Department of Chemistry California State University, Chico 1983 Subaru ("The 'Ru") 1984 Westfalia ("Heisenberg")
