Actually, go to vanagon.com to see the now-classic picture of the SA Vanagon (at the bottom of the pix page) -- if you will carefully study the picture closely you will notice that the windows are MUCH taller than ours (by about 2") and that the body panels are indeed different - there is no horizontal "notch" under the windows as in our vans. This makes sense as the larger windows necessitated eliminating this body feature. The front doors are also different.

I cannot explain it any better than that. If you still have trouble "seeing" the difference I suggest you print the picture out on your printer and then going outside and comparing it to your Vanagon -- you'll see what I mean.
