That's interesting. Never heard of anyone doing it. Sounds like a great idea tho. The rotary shud not be noticably hotter, are we talking water temp here? They are running more fuel, less surface area so exaust water will probably be hotter but I can't think of the practicable drawback. As for louder, depends on what you muffle it with. The exaust without a muffler is much louder than a piston but that does not necessarally mean you are going to have a loud VW.

I est. about a 20% reduction in MPG. This is the only real drawback of the engine. As for engine drag, you are turning a lot less engine. Drag will be about half of what you currently have. Just down shift some more. You won't hurt it.
