Matthew - Old habits die hard. I try not to use my engine to slow my Vanagon down. Maybe I generated the image of disengaging the clutch while going down-hill. Sorry. I think this started with someone's comment about the Wankel probably not providing much "braking" ability, then a comment about the Smokies which made it sound as though we put our lives in danger there. That "I have never found a mountain road..." is a statement, needing no assumption of implications on your part. It was, in context, pertaining to this area of the country. Actually, with the clutch engaged, I don't remember seeing over 4Krpm in fourth.

I enjoy watching other folks try to burn rubber & chirp 'em going into 2nd in VW vans. You say it is "debatable" whether or not using the engine as a substitute for brakes damages it but you consider that comment to have a "latent implication"? From fear of my Vanagon's "karma", I never speak ill of my van in front of it, never yell at or kick it. I also use distilled water in the cooling system and change the oil & filter because my van told me it's soothing to her. Have no idea if it's necessary, just an old habit.

I also say "excuse me" when I belch & laugh when I fart. But that is for another day to discuss the implications involved.
