My mechanic told me that the starting problem on my 87 Westy was caused by the oil pressure relief valve sticking. Sounds strange to me, but if its true then its something to keep in mind next time you have trouble starting and its not electrical. In this case, the engine made a whirring noise. He said it was trying to blow the filter off! Could cause major internal damage as well (hopefully not in this case!).
