I had the same problem with my 81 L. I checked the cable, which was ok. After about 2 or 3k miles, the speedometer died. I got one at a junkyard after recovering from my FLD's price quote for a new one. Saved some serious bucks *and* bought a nice hunk of false sense of security, looking down at the replacement's odometer, which hadn't yet turned 60,000 miles. Alas, all the other parts in the Vanagon were about 100,000 miles closer to the last roundup...
