There is no reason why an empty tank would affect the knobs. Since you haven't a lot of experience with such repairs recommend going to an RV dealer for servicing. Learning on things that go " boom" is not a good idea.

To replace my screen with no-see-um screen, I removed the pop top and then removed the canvas cover. Took me about two hours to get the top off. A canvas shop repaired two worn spots in the canvas and replaced the screen for around C$75. Took about four hours to put the top back on.
