This is not uncommon with Vanagons. The computer really leans out the fuel
mixture at idle. Carbon build up in the combustion chamber also contributes
to this problem. I've found that it sometimes helps to run a bottle of
Techron or other fuel injection cleaner through the system. This doesn't
eliminate the problem for long however. Chunky, lumpy idle is one of the
Vanagon's less redeeming characteristics...
