Subject: Clutch Slave Piston Seal installation

Listees,

Can anyone give a hint on the technique to install the seal on the piston of the clutch slave? Haynes is loud on the subject, and Bentley is silent, for those who are DIYers, and who want specific information for the home mechanic.

I've torn the seal on the first attempt, and I'm hoping to avoid the same error on the next try.

The kit is sold only complete at between $15 and $20 at NAPA or Pep Boys, locally. The necessary seal is about the size of a garden hose washer, and at $20 a pop, it is a very expensive item. The seal, according to one Listee could be purchased separately at Motion Industries or King Bearings. I called, and visited the local MI and the salesman said that the supplier declines to sell the seal separately because of "liability" problems.

A new cylinder from Ron is a $60.00 item. At that price, the hassle and expense of the seal installation on the piston, the acquisition of the hone, the grinding of the cylinder and the trips to the outlets are avoided. I seem to have embarked on a false economy. But I did learn how to grind cylinders by use of a Lisle hone tool, another $20 investment.

Do any of the non-US members know if the seals are available, solo, without the kit, which includes a boot and two wire fasteners?

Please post public responses to this query. I'm told that seals on clutch master cylinders, wheel cylinders and clutch master cylinders have need replacement late in the lives of Vanagons. My Westy is at that stage in the life cycle.
