I'll bet that this was one of the suggestions they came up with when they started noticing the shifting problems in the 091-1 gearboxes with the non- Moly coated syncro rings and the petroleum based gear oil. Once we did the teardown at VW (and now here at my shop) I replace the syncros, the crack prone 3rd/4th gear hub, and some other modifications to other potential problem areas, and fill it with synthetic GL4 'till it runs out the fill hole.
