Subject: Syncro Coolant Flush
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

Hello all,

I was planning on draining and flushing my coolant system, today. Anyway, the drain plugs on the engine block as pictured in my Bentley and Haynes appears to be behind some rock guards which are bolted to the exhaust outtakes at top front and rear and to the engine support frame below. Are these syncro specific? My exhaust system here is rusted to the point of no return (the nuts are about 1/2 original volume.)

Should I drain and flush by disconnecting hoses only? I have two postings printed out recommending a flush tee. I don't want to install anything that might throttle down a coolant line. I was going to manually, with a rag and a hose, flush from a disconnected line from the lower radiator connection. They also recommend running the engine with the "flush" going on.

I will also be able to disconnect hoses at the thermostat housing near the engine to drain.

I'm not ready to replace the exhaust system. Any thoughts, warnings, advice is greatly appreciated.
