I've been wondering why folks don't use stainless as well.  In my sports
car days SS fuel line was standard for British sports-race cars: anyone
with an electric fuel pump used SS flex lines.  Now, you didn't need much:
Lucas pumps had rigid  lines in and out, and the carbs had rigid lines and
banjo fittings, so you only needed enough flex line to allow for vibration.
 But once installed it lasted forever, and I never heard of any problems.
My Westie has very nice fuel lines (not cotton covered: I suspect some form
of neoprene) so I'm not changing them in the near future, but when they
start to get hard I'll be using SS flex lines.
