Ok. my turn? My first VW experience was in 1963 when my dad bought a VW beetle. This was in North Borneo (yes.. we had head hunters.. yum yum eat them up they said looking at all the well fed missionaries..it's now call Sabah, an eastern state of the Federation of Malaysia). That was our family car until I went away to the US for school (MIT).

In 1978 fresh out of grad school, I bought an Audi Fox.. (it's still running with 250,000 miles and two engine rebuilts!) In 1980, I bought a 1974 WestFalia to take a vacation driving across the country.. ended up in Santa Fe with a burnt valve and blown head. Put a new engine in in the parkling lot of a motel 6 and went on my merry way. When I got back home (Boulder Co), I sold the van to help with down payment on a house!

In 1987 (now in calif) I bought a new 1987 Vanagon GL couple of months before the birth of our first daughter.. we still have the Van and my wife loves it to death..and will never part with it.. so I have to keep fixing it to keep it alive and well.. at least until they import the Vanagon in the US again! Meanwhile, I've been given a dead 1979 Rabbit and very sick 1980 US Rabbit both of which I kept for less than a year to fix up and give to my poor relatives (fresh-off-the-boat-type.. teach them how to drive and survive in Calif!)

I am 45 with 2 very cute daughters and a gorgeous blue-eye blond wife. We live in Martinez, Calif, a little goofy town 25 miles east of San Fransisco. I work at the University of California, Berkeley where I am the director of Network & Computing Service for the College of Chemistry. I got into networks in the 1980's when I burnt out as a high-energy physicist. ( I had my first e-mail account in 1978 with the then ARPANET - predessor to the internet!) I commute to work in my 1984 Infiniti Q45t. To help pay for this expensive toy, I moonlight as a IT consultant for small businesses.

Yau-Man Chan 87 GL
