Hi Bob,

That explains my experience. I live in central North Carolina. When I got Vanagon-itis and purchased a plane ticket to western Tennessee (Memphis) to pay asking price for a van sight unseen from an internet ad, I found out about Tennessee laws. There was no inspection, so the previous owners didn't need brakes because there are no hills there anyway, the muffler was replaced with a sport tube, and the thing hadn't been tuned in years so it failed NC emissions by several orders of magnitude. OK, so here I am many miles away from home inspecting the oil dripper of my dreams, and the only title the DPO's have was from Arizona (where the DPO first lived). They managed to get Tennessee plates for four years, and never got a Tennessee title! Forutnately, the Arizona title had a raised seal, so it looked official enough for me to take the chance. I was about ready to toss the whole deal and return home broke and empty-handed bcause of the potential disaster if NC D.M.V. didn't like the Arizona title. That was almost more worrisome than driving 700 miles in one hot day in a van that hadn't seen an oil or coolant change in forever.
