I did take my LP tank to a place where they did sand blasting (call around), I then soaked it in "Rust Check" then let it dry for a week, then painted it with "Rust Destroyer" spray paint, then after another week, I sprayed it with an asphalt rocker panel coating stuff. I re-sprayed the fittings with asphalt spray again after installation. I hope it will last forever.

If you can't find a sand blaster, there is a product that was called Naval Jelly, but now seems to be more generically called Rust Remover. It would be found at the local hardware store. Try that after the paint remover.
