Just to add my two cents worth....

I traveled in Europe for three months about 15 years ago. I purchased a Combi camper with a lift up roof - 1972 vintage. With this 1600, I traveled 6000 Miles in 3 months at a maximum of 50 Mph ( no need to hurry when on a three month holiday) My average consumption for the entire trip: 10 liters per 100 km.:-)) Excellent

I used to have a 2.0 air cooled panel van that I had converted to a camper. My consumption was in the region of 18 to 20 liters per 100 km.

I now have a 2.1 Syncro, I get much better consumption. This depend mainly on the speed that I travel, not on the town/country factor. the average is about 16 liters per 100 km but I have had as low as 13.5 and up to about 18. I travel at about 65-75mph.

My conclusion - 2.1 water cooled is much more economical than 2.0 air cooled:-)

I have never driven on the long road at 80km/h with any of my vehicles here, so I don't know what they would do. The 2.0 would never get down to 10 liters per 100 km, The 2.1 - well maybe it would get to 12.
