Subject: '83 Rabbit worthy companion of Vanagon?

My sister is getting ready to dump her '84 Rabbit since my brother in law is a Chevy/Olds motorhead and is tired of the diffent systems. I'm wondering if the knowledge acquired in working on our '87 Vanagon will translate well to the Rabbit, and thus if I should get it from her. The only thing I don't care for is that it's carbed, so all the stuff about diagnosing the FI system won't be the same.

It's even the same color as our Vanagon and with the square headlights, they look similar. :-)
