The very same thing happens with my '91 Vanagon camper!

When it occurs, it's always within the first 5 minutes of a cold start AND generally occurs when accelerating after a stop or after idling in traffic. My belief is that it's somehow caused by a combination of *bad* values from the oxygen sensor AND one of the temperature sensors.
