Hello all!

Yesterday evening I tried to start up, got maybe half a turn of cranking, sort of agonized groan and then nothing from the starter. Sh*t, I was in a hurry, it was freeezing, it was dark.

Tried hooking up a support battery, disconnected the extra solenoid relay, tried knocking on the solenoid with a hammer, nothing.

Ran off and borrowed another car, slipped on a root in the forest, tore up my trousers and got a bad bruise. No friday fun at all!

So, the position at the moment is like this:
The morning sun is shining, there is a beautiful frost on the grass and the red and yellow maple-laeves. The solenoid makes a click, the interiour lights dim and then nothing.

I need some help, first with diagnosing, and then with fixing this.

If the solenoid were bad, it wouldn't click, right? So probably it is the starter, My guess is that the brushes finally have passed on. Any suggestions from the list?

(Yes, I did search the archive, but I couldn't stae my search criteria to get a god return. BTW I really like the listserv "search")
