Hello All!

This morning I began to remove the starter, and found that the heavy cable from the battery was broken. The crimp-on connector just fell off, exposing broken and tarnished strands.

I jumped onto my bike and me and my son David (11yrs) pedalled off to a friend who has a smashed-up carcass in his garage. I found him in his barn-wharf, where he is building a steel "Spray" -cruiser. Come on, you Americans! You know Joshua Slocum, don't you? We had a nice chat on this and that, being fellow Vanagon-sufferers and wooden-boat owners does create a bond.

I removed the OK-looking battery cable from the remains of his old van and took a very rural track back home. David's got a mountain-bike, but I'm still using my much converted racer from the time when we lived in the city. 1-1/8" tires are a pain in the rump on lightly frozen mud previously trodden by horses. The local farmers are dunging for all they are worth, tomorrow is November 1:st, and then they have to apply for a special permit. That slurry does smell terribly, and runs off the frozen ground into the streams and lakes.

Back home I soon found out that I must remove the fuel-tank to replace the cable. Next time maybe I'll get a british car, then I will be prepared for any stupidity.
