I think you need both. The Bentley is a more "authorative" manual.. It has all the VW blessed procedures for doing things and calls for VW tools xyz which the home mechanic may not have. However it is always good to know what the formal procedure is for doing somthing. The Haynes is more informal and geared towards the home mechanic. It has good hint and shortcuts on how to do different job and good suggestions on substitutes for VW Tool xyz. In general, the photo and pictures on the Haynes is not has high quality as the Bentley but the written description is a lot more detailed in the Haynes.
