The first time I ran into the word "Wannigan" when I rented a trailer when I
first went to Alaska. Trailer life is very much a part of living there and
any trailer that has been in place for any length of time will have a room--
-often as big as the trailer itself----built onto it that is called a
"Wannigan". It becomes as much a part of the living quarters as any other
part, and sometimes more so. I have seen people live more in the wannigan
than in the trailer. Wannigans are often built to provide more room later
and allow the construction of an "Arctic Entry"....a little vestibule where
the outside entry door can be closed before the inside entry door is opened.
When it is -50F outside and +75F inside, with a temperature difference of
125 degrees, the cold air flows like water through a broken dam when those
doors are open. So the idea is to break the flow of the stream of cold air
coming into the house so the temperature in the house is not dramatically
affected. Sort of like having two locks on a river channel.
