The engine in a Syncro is already 5-6 cm lower than in a 2 wheel drive vanagon. If the interference in a 2 wheel drive vanagon is only 3 cm, the Audi 5 cyl should clear the deck lid in a Syncro with no problem at all. I measured my 86 Syncro vs my 86 2 wheel drive vanagon. The engine is about 2 1/4 inches lower at each end with respect to the engine cover, in the Syncro. Of course it is more correct to say that the body is higher by this amount. Perhaps he was considering that my van was a Syncro and therefore did not suggest lowering the engine to me. He even sent me pictures (taken out of the Winkler catalog) of how the engine sits "only" 3cm above the deck!!! > > Anyway, it DOES make sense that 2wd Vanagons could lower the engine to fit, I'm just not sure if it also applies to Syncros. > > Cheers, > MJS > > At 08:23 AM 11/6/98 EST, JordanVw@AOL.COM wrote: > >i spoke to Detlev AGAIN yesterday - and he said they have just started the > >swap of putting a '86 audi 5cyl turbo engine into a customers '89 > >Vanagon....and he said the goal is to get it ALL TO FIT UNDER THE ENGINE LID, > >WITHOUT RAISING IT. > >he did NOT say anything about raising the lid 1.5 inch...
