Having read Bob's excellent description of a truly tedious procedure, I am *not* going to replace my oil pump without a better indication that it is truly the problem.

While brazing up a hole in the exhaust collector-pipe (to hold me until Bus Depot order comes in) I noticed an odd groaning/scraping/squeaking noise from the running engine. Sounded like a dry shaft or even possibly a squeaking belt. I listened all over with a stethoscope, never heard anything that seemed abnormal except that there was quite a commotion going on in the pipe that returns from the right head to the thermostat -- don't think that's connected. The noise would occasionally stop while idling, but would start again if I revved the engine. It would increase in pitch with the revving engine. On my closing the throttle, it would decrease as the engine came down to idle, then change character slightly for a couple of seconds and return to original. This short change was consistent, every time just after the speed returned to idle. The noise got flatter somehow, and possibly increased in pitch just a trifle.

I took off the belt (no A/C or P/S) and the noise remained, so not water pump or alternator or belt. The back end was up on ramps, so I let it down, tried again -- same noise.

Today I tried the engine twice and no funny noises at all. Listening with the stethoscope, the above-mentioned coolant pipe again started making a racket as the thermostat began to open. And the more I look at the oil pump assy, the less I can imagine it making this sort of noise -- the thing is pretty much bathed in oil, including the drive shaft, right?

Has anyone got a clue?
