The engine in a Syncro is already 5-6 cm lower than in a 2 wheel drive vanagon. If the interference in a 2 wheel drive vanagon is only 3 cm, the Audi 5 cyl should clear the deck lid in a Syncro with no problem at all. I measured my 86 Syncro vs my 86 2 wheel drive vanagon. The engine is about 2 1/4 inches lower at each end with respect to the engine cover, in the Syncro. Of course it is more correct to say that the body is higher by this amount.
