Yes, Syncro's have their engine lower (1.5") than the 2WD Vanagons. This is quite evident in the engine crossmembers.

The 2.0L I4 in my Syncro needs to be only lowered another 1.5" and it would clear the deck ( mine does clear my deck as I have a Double Cab Pickup, but I am talking about "normal" Vanagons / Westies) the only thing that is a problem is the intake manifold. This could easily be redesigned ( lowered) to fit.
