I note "shine out at a different angle" in Phillip's original message: Someone experiencing Euro-pattern lights for the first time might be "surprised" by the deliberate rise-to-the-right designed into these units to provide better side-of-the road illumination. (How many hyphens can I get in one sentence?)

http://lighting.mbz.org/ provides the most comprehensive discussion of headighting I've ever seen, and beam patterns are thoroughly discussed in the FAQ. (Yes, this is a subsite of the Benz club!)
