Try 3M Marine One-Step Fibreglass Cleaner & Wax. It did a great job for me.

I repaired a couple of tears in my netting by sewing a small patch of netting over the tears. It wasn't that difficult or expensive. About 10 cents for the netting patch vs probably big bucks for a replacement netting.

>Should the canvas poptop be treated with some water-repelling chemical?

Canvas does not need any water-repelling chemical treatment. Mine has effectively kept out water for 11 years with no additional treatment.

No idea why but that's how it is. Who knows what goes on in the mind of Volkswagen designers? My stereo came with a remote control which did everything but power down the unit. Great when you're upstairs stargazing and want to change the music to something more appropriate!
