Joe, I traveled from Alaska to Alabama in my '85 GL and slept back there.

As you know there is an upholstered foam pad back there in the back that also serves a insulation and sound deading material. Also the folding rear seat really does fold out flat. You probably know, but if you release the rear seat back catch, pull the top of the seat back slightly forward, and then lift up on the front of the rear seat bottom and pull forward, the seat bottom will go forward a good bit, and at the same time the seat back will fold down backward to a flat out position. I find that I have to remove the rear cargo pad to allow the seat back to go all the way down, then reposition it a little, but it works fine. I can still close my rear hatch/door.

I use a 3" foam urethane foam pad laid over the rear pad and seats, and on top of that I put down an "egg crate" foam pad like you might have on your bed at home. Walmart and other's carry them. Then I lay down a well padded blanket over that. THEN I throw in my sleeping bag and or extra blankets and a pillow. I believe in my sleeping comfort.

I slept like a babe on that trip.

Hope this helps.

Subject: luggage area

what's the best way to have a level sleeping surface in the luggage area (back hatch) of a vanagon gl transporter. when the rear seat is folded down it still sticks up a little bit.

any suggestions?
