Looking at the Bentley manual in depth I would have to agree with the statement that the transmissions are the same for the Audi / Golf and Vanagon and could be interchanged. Stangely enough the Vanagon and Audi manuals have the automatic in section 38 (Hmmm...) The codes are different:

Vanagon 090 Audi 5000 087 VW A Series 010

Some gearing is different:

Final 1st 2nd 3rd Rev Van -82: 4:09 2.55 1.45 1.0 2.46 Van 82-: 4:09 2.71 1.50 1.0 2.43 Golf 3.41 2.71 1.50 1.0 2.43 Audi 5K 3.08 2.71 1.50 1.0 2.43 Audi 5K 3.45 2.71 1.50 1.0 2.43 Audi 5K 3.25 2.71 1.50 1.0 2.43 Audi Fox 4.09 2.65 1.59 1.0 1.80

Note the final drive is NOT interchangeable.

Forward Clutch number of splined plates: Vanagon inner 4 - outer 3 Audi Gas inner 5 - outer 3 Audi Diesel inner 4 - outer 3

Many different ATF cooling systems on the Audi transmissions too... they look like a decent alternative!
