As a general rule of thumb they are the same and are inter- changeable to a point. The Golf/Jetta versions tended to be a lighter duty version than the heavier Audi/Vanagon versions. If I had my choice I would take a 5000 trans for my Van instead of the Golf version. But they both will work!
