My guess, Helmut can't correct me if wrong here, is, when I was station in
then West Germany, in 1978 to 1981.  Cars had extra tail lights that were turn
on during the night (usually only one side or the other) to warn vehicles of
there locations along the side of their very curvy and windy roads on foggy
nights.  I think this light was controlled by the directional with the
ignition turned off. (there was many times that I was glad of this feature
personally)................
