The Suburbans have a very good reputation, and are probably the most popular furnaces for RV's. VW's Eurovan campers use Suburban furnaces. Camping World (http://www.campingworld.com) currently has the 12000 BTU unit (which I think is the one the Eurovan uses) listed at $389.

The problem for the Vanagon is that the Suburbans are relatively big. The smallest one they make (the 12000 BTU) is about 9.5"x9.5"x22.5", and would be hard to fit into a Vanagon. They're also side-flued, which I think would present additional installation difficulties. (The Carver can be floor-flued). I think they also draw a bit more power and fuel than the Carver (formerly Propex). However, if you can find a way to fit one in, I think it would be a very good alternative to the Carver - less expensive, and more standard (in the U.S., anyway). See http://www.coolcontent.com/twc/Suburban for more information on Suburban furnaces.
