Subject: Syncro Coolant Changed

Hello from Brooklyn,

Thanks, publicly, for all those who responded to me with suggestions and encouragement. A pair of ramps and a hose from the basement later and I was in the great tradition of street mechanics of NYC. In fact I have heard of some good ones in the Bronx, one of whom, Wing, is the Vanagon guy. (Just in case you're on the Cross Bronx Expressway I-95 someday or night and have trouble.)

I changed the coolant by draining (it was green) and flushing from the expansion tank lower hose, the two radiator hoses just behind the front wheels, and the front heater lines. Radiator was thoroughly flushed. Toward the engine one radiator line was blocked (by the thermostat I assume) and the other flowed easily to the expansion tank. I drained it , filled it with water, ran the engine for a minute, drained it with the rear wheels on ramps, then refilled it with the neat coolant and water, put the front wheels up on the ramps, bled the radiator.

So far, so good. Test drive this Saturday to the Pennsylvania appalachians.

I also noticed that the metal coolant pipe from the water pump toward the right has dents from what looks like a rock tumbling through there courtesy of the pulleys. It doesn't look like it will spring a leak, but I guess I should get an extra one to have around at least.

Regards, -- David Bogle
