I don't know how it is in other provinces in Canada, but in Nova Scotia, vehicles like Westfalias qualify for special Camper plates, if you want them. When I asked the nice lady at the Vehicle Registration place what the advantage of camper plates was, she smiled and said: "You can carry open liquor in the vehicle, since it's considered a sort of a temporary residence." This of course does not mean you can drive around drinking the stuff, but a bottle in the cupboard that has already been opened is legal. I went for the Camper plates.
