It shows pictures of the different alternator connections to look for on 83.5-91 models. Basically, you can use the Bosch AL33X in place of the original AL27X that was installed on various years and in fact is now the "default replacement from Bosch for the AL27X. The AL33X has a "W" terminal used for some sort of sensing on various Vanagon Models as well as some other Watercooleds too. The AL27X does not have that "W" Terminal.

Some 85-86 models used the AL30X Alternator (according to Bosch), but I've never seen one before to be honest, which has no interchange that I know of.

All 3 versions of alternators mentioned are 90amp output.
