Mark,

1) yes that smell probably means the motor windings are toast. same thing happened to us a few years back when a slightly overlength (1") wiper blade jammed against the window trim. 2) I also wonder if this fuse is oversized! 2a) ? not sure what you're asking

BTY: at my local boneyard I bought a used Scirroco rear wiper motor, which worked with a little FF (engineering terminology for File to Fit). Correct wiper blade length re-installed.

Simple precaution against another burnout: took the fuse out for a cross-Canada trip this past summer, due to the hatch mounted bicycle rack.

Volks, <snip> the rear wiper quit and my wife reported "burning smells" from rear hatch. the fuse (10 amp) did not blow and none of the wires to the motor looked as cooked as the smell given off.
