I am the wife who smashed the side of the blue '88 Westy.<<<snip>>> Mary Anne Caslowitz >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Ms. "Wife who smashed the Westy" Caslowitz Don't feel badly. Many people don't realize it, but VW installs a large, invisible, super-conducting magnet in the van/bus body at exactly the point where you smacked the pole. Even using all of my fingers, and taking my shoes off too, I can't count the number of VW vans I have seen with this ding. Even my beloved first loaf (a 1976) was Christened by a good friend as he approached the fuel pump at the station.

In reality, it is a common mistake of mis-negotiating the physics of driving a cab-over vehicle. I get all confused when I drive my Westy for a while, then hop in the Jetta. Of course, I don't run it into things though. :) Jus' kidding.

Best of luck,
