After Michael's assurances that using the socket would work seat the circlip, I went out measured the driveshaft and bought a 27mm socket. This did the trick in about 5 blows of the mallet. A definite change in the sound the impact of the mallet-extender-socket-circlip-driveshaft accompanied the seating of the circlip. I had tried it with a 29mm socket before writing the list last night but could not get the circlip to seat. Thank you Michael for getting me to give it another go...
