Really? What does it look like? Where can I get one? The auto-shutoff that I'm familiar with (has a red-vinyl-covered brass button on the side and a little brass valve on the top that opens the bleed tube) shuts off by detecting the change from gas to liquid venting through the bleed tube. They quit making them a couple or five years ago but you can maybe get reconditioned ones for $150 or so (the plain valve costs about $40-50). Anyway, that's what's on the '84 -- in my case the bleed tube is disconnected and has a manual bleed valve, just like your propane guy described. The valve I'm describing has only a 3/4" pipe thread connection into the tank -- does yours have a bigger hole in the tank? Do you have any info on what it looks like, specs, anything? Do you know when they made the changeover to the float-type? Any info greatly appreciated.

I also expect to talk to the NFPA to try to get some clarification -- they're nearby, but they have a nasty tendency to $ell their materials, and they're all copyrighted so you won't find them on the web.
