This is exactly the situation I described in my own "strange noise"
thread of last week, except that mine is more squealing than grinding
noise.  I have same loud noise in water pipe -- think maybe not
connected to the problem.  By listening through a tube I isolate the
noise to the crank pulley/oil pump area, but with a stethoscope the
oil pump sounds completely happy.  My unhappy conclusion is at the
very best a dry crankshaft oil seal (but I'm not sure that's possible
-- any knowledgeable volks out there?) and failing that a chattering
crank or camshaft bearing.  I'm going out on a limb here and
suspecting camshaft because I think a crank bearing would have failed
catastrophically by now.  I must say I *really* wish for an oil pan I
could drop right now. :(

Any other thoughts from the experts?
