Patrick, if you go to the Archives and do a word surch on shifting problems, you'll find a number of great suggestions. I did because I had the same problem with a 81 Vanagon. Turns out it was needing a little re-aligning of the shifter shaft at the coupling just aft of the chassis beam that is in front of the transaxle. Five minutes and I put to rest a problem that plaged me for four+ years!
