Subject: 88 Westie: Headlight Out - How to replace?

I know this question is gonna be an eye-roller for a lot of you, but when it comes to things mechanical, I'm pretty brain-dead. So I noticed that one of my headlights is out on my '88, and went to the FLAPS to get a new one. There I was told that instead of needing the entire square headlight, I needed only the filament ( the box says "halogen lamp" and it looks like a large spark plug with a light bulb on the end of it). I was told that the old filament is to be removed, and the new one installed, with the actual headlight housing never having to be removed.

I'm not sure I was given correct information, and having bought the car without the owner's manual, I can't get any info on the procedure for changing the light out. So:

In an '88, is it true that you replace only the filament, and not the entire headlight?

Is it necessary to remove the grill in order to put a new headlight in, or how exactly can the headlight be reached for replacement?

Btw, the headlight will light up when I put the brights on, but it goes dark when only the normal beams are on, if that's pertinent.

Any help appreciated. I don't want to have to rename Rozinante to Polyphemus.

Chris Paquette '88 Westie, Rozinante Los Angeles, CA
