Rick,
I thought your problem was the ECU as you mentioned later in your post.
Looks like my guess eventually was right. Apparently this thick red wire
connect to an alternator stud is a problematic area for the Vanagon.
People should check it periodically to make sure it's not loose!!!

Rick,
Did you hear the fuel pump running about 3 seconds while you turn ignition
on but BEFORE you start the engine? If it does, then I suppose your fuel
pump and circuit control/relay are not the cause of your problem. Try
other suggestions from list members. It happened to me once that a thick
red wire connect to an alternator stud was broken inside of the insulated
tube. I couldn't tell it was broken from outside but it cut off the 12v
supply to the fuel pump thus the fuel pump is not running at all. It's
hard for me to believe that the wire that thick (must be 10 gauge) will
broke so it took me a while to trace to the problem. Must be the engine
vibrated too much during idle.
