>>> Austin <austins@IX.NETCOM.COM> 11/18 8:59 PM >>> Somewhere I have one of the first magazine ads introducing Mobil1 (early '70s?) in which they were claiming oil changes of 25K miles/once a year...probably had to knock it off because of pressure from manufacturers (they now want you to follow mfgr's rec's)...hhmmmm, they sell more oil this way, right? Austin >> Yes, you remembered right. When I first used it in the 70's, I use to leave it in for 20K miles.. It is good for more than that but it does get very dirty and smelly!.. I decide that it's really pushing it.. so when I had my first brand new car (Audi Fox), I decide to go 10K per change. As for manufacturers recommendation of 3K miles, that is a very conservative number even for regular oil... and I think it is only in the US (What do they recommend in Canada?) I know in the UK, the recommendation is 10K miles per change even for non-synethics and back in Malaysia, the recomendation is "once a year".. Yau-Man Chan 87 GL |
