Rick, I thought your problem was the ECU as you mentioned later in your post. Looks like my guess eventually was right. Apparently this thick red wire connect to an alternator stud is a problematic area for the Vanagon. People should check it periodically to make sure it's not loose!!!

If it does, then I suppose your fuel pump and circuit control/relay are not the cause of your problem. Try other suggestions from list members. It happened to me once that a thick red wire connect to an alternator stud was broken inside of the insulated tube. I couldn't tell it was broken from outside but it cut off the 12v supply to the fuel pump thus the fuel pump is not running at all. It's hard for me to believe that the wire that thick (must be 10 gauge) will broke so it took me a while to trace to the problem. Must be the engine vibrated too much during idle. Good luck, Yi-Ruey Wei 87 Vanagon GL Syncro w/78K miles 85 Jetta GLI w/165K miles Dallas, Texas ---------------------------------------------------------------- The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material.
